Meta Plans to Add AI-Generated Users and Content to Social Media

The social media giant has announced plans to seamlessly integrate AI-generated profiles and characters across Facebook and other platforms as part of a broader engagement strategy.
Details:
These AI profiles will include bios, profile pictures, and the ability to create and share content, coexisting with regular user accounts.
In July, Meta launched AI character creation tools that have already been used to create 'hundreds of thousands of characters,' according to Connor Hayes, the company’s Vice President of Product for Generative AI.
Though the vast majority of these AI-created characters remain private for now, Meta anticipates they will become widespread across its platforms in the next few years.
Meta’s strategy aims to draw in younger users and maintain high engagement levels, but the question remains: will this make platforms feel more dynamic or diminish the genuine nature of connections?
AI cracks the code on antibodies

Antibodies are nature’s puzzle pieces. But putting them together has been an enigma. MIT’s new AI model is turning this challenge on its head. By reducing timelines from months to mere days, MIT’s model, AbMAP, is revolutionizing how vaccines and therapies are developed.
How it works: The model, trained on vast datasets, uses a combination of deep learning and advanced molecular modeling to analyze antibody structures, identify patterns, and make predictions. This means faster timelines for drug development and more targeted therapies for diseases like cancer and autoimmune disorders.

Researchers Develop an AI System that Generates Manga-Style Comics

Developed by researchers from Peking University, the Shanghai AI Laboratory, and Nanyang Technological University, DiffSensei can transform written stories into manga-style comics—automatically.
Details:
It uses cutting-edge diffusion models and large language models to handle visuals and storytelling, ensuring consistency in character design and layout throughout the story. DiffSensei generates manga in three steps: creating page layouts, drawing characters, and adding dialogue.
To train the system, the researchers built a massive dataset called MangaZero, which includes over 43,000 manga pages and 427,000 annotated panels.
The team demonstrated the technology by creating a fictional manga about the struggles and successes of AI pioneers Hinton, LeCun, and Bengio, culminating in their Nobel Prize win.
DiffSensei has some limitations: it struggles with unclear character references, can sometimes blend similar-looking characters, and, without detailed references, the artwork may appear generic.
While it’s not flawless, it has the potential to help artists and publishers streamline manga production. The research team has made more examples and resources available on the DiffSensei project page.
